Introduction

Are you wondering what the different types of Bipolar Disorder are?  If so, continue reading this article to find out more information.  According to bpf.org, they include Bipolar I Disorder, Bipolar II Disorder, and Cyclothymia.  According to ibpf.org, Bipolar I Disorder consists of mania, Bipolar II Disorder consists of hypomania, while Cyclothymia consists of symptoms for 2 years.

Bipolar I Disorder

According to ibpf.org, the first type of Bipolar Disorder is Bipolar I Disorder.  According to ibpf.org, Bipolar I disorder is the “classic form of the illness.”  It is also the most severe type of Bipolar Disorder.  It is characterized by at least one manic episode or a mixed episode.   In addition to experiencing a manic or mixed episode, a major depressive episode may also occur but is not required for a diagnosis of Bipolar I Disorder.

Bipolar II Disorder

In addition to Bipolar I Disorder, the next type of Bipolar Disorder is Bipolar II Disorder.  According to ibpf.org, mania is not a part of Bipolar II Disorder.  On another note, Bipolar II Disorder involves instances of major depression and hypomania.  According to ibpf.org, “In order to be diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, you must have experienced at least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode in your lifetime.”

Cyclothymia

In addition to Bipolar I Disorder and Bipolar II Disorder, according to ibpf.org, the third type of Bipolar Disorder is Cyclothymia.  According to ibpf.org, cyclothymia consists of “cyclical mood swings.”  However, the highs and lows are not severe enough to qualify as either Bipolar I Disorder or Bipolar II Disorder.  According to ibpf.org, “to be diagnosed with cyclothymia, you must experience numerous periods of hypomania and mild depression over at least a two-year time span.
